HISTORY: Wiki
PERSONALITY: Hotaru is an important character in the Sailor Moon series because of her past actions but she has relatively limited exposure in comparison to the other scouts. That said, she has a unique and deep character with some key elements:
- Great Purpose: As illustrated later in the manga Tomoe shows great purpose in her personality. She is, perhaps, more self-sacrificing and determined than any of the other scouts. When she has a set a goal she has great focus to fulfill it (often regardless of the costs). In Act 37, as Sailor Saturn, Tomoe makes the ultimate sacrifice in a suicidal attack that kills a great enemy (Pharaoh 90) that all of the other scouts fail to defeat. Even in her civilian life, Tomoe shows great resolve, living with a debilitating condition that brings on fits and coughing bouts, she still strives to live as normal a life as possible and often shirks pity or sympathy from others as seen in Act 29 with Chibiusa tries to comfort her when she falls to her knees coughing violently.
- Defensive: Tomoe has had a difficult upbringing; after a terrible accident her family went through when she was very young (around five years old) she lost her mother and her father became obsessive about keeping her alive. As a result she had a very poor relationship with her remaining family and resents her father for his closeness to his assistant (Kaori). Tomoe feels jealous of Kaori as she has to share her father’s attention with her and the two of them often clash over trivial matters. For example, in Act 31, Tomoe snaps aggressively at Kaori when she questions the two guests she’s brought home when Kaori may have only have been curious. Another example of Tomoe’s defensive nature appears again, earlier in Act 31, when some bullies tease Tomoe for being “a bit weird” and Tomoe shows them a glimpse of her powers by crushing a pencil tin with ease between her fingers. Tomoe is anxious about getting too close to others and her defensive nature is a barrier to stop herself from getting hurt again as she was with her mother’s passing away.
- Self-deprecating: Tomoe thinks very little of herself, why this is is not entirely clear but it is assumed that because of her lack of support at home and the bullying she gets at school she has low self esteem. One example of this is when Chibiusa offers her a gift of friendship and Tomoe initially rejects it, telling Chibiusa to keep the gift and save it for someone more important to her (Act 29). Her lack of confidence ties in with her defensive nature; the two personality traits creating an emotional ‘guard’ that is extremely difficult to penetrate and there are very few characters in the series who see the ‘real’ nature of Sailor Saturn.
- Forgiving: Regardless of her defensive and withdrawn nature Tomoe has a gentle, forgiving heart under her many defensive traits. In Act 49, as Sailor Saturn, Tomoe pleads for several old enemies to be revived regardless of their past transgressions. This comes after she sacrificed some of her own power and energy to “save” their souls. As critical as she may be of her own actions Tomoe seems a lot more forgiving of other characters in the series.
- Eccentric: The last and probably least commented on personality trait of Hotaru’s is her eccentricity and her strangeness. In the manga she experiences mood swings, hypochondria and has some very odd habits (for example, in Act 29 she expresses her love of the dark and how she enjoys collecting… lamps). This weirdness is, for the most part, harmless but makes her a slightly unsettling character for some. Most of the scouts do not connect with Hotaru on an emotional level and she has very few close friends.
ABILITIES: Hotaru/Sailor Saturn’s abilities, unlike the other Sailor Scouts, aren’t really defined in the manga. She is feared by all of the other Scouts for being the harbinger of destruction as in a past life she was a destroyer of worlds and many of the characters have apocalyptic premonitions of her awakening. She has some similar abilities to her comrades and some which are unique to her:
- Saturn Crystal Power, Make Up: Featured only in the manga this is where Hotaru Tomoe transforms her attire into her purple Sailor Scout uniform. Later in the manga when she has been reincarnated into a new body her child’s body ages up to an adult during this transformation.
- Silence Glaive: The Silence Glaive is Saturn’s weapon (which resembles a very long sycth) and it is also the name of her most powerful attack. The Silence Glaive is a suicidal attack which destroys the planet she’s residing on. The true nature of this attack is not explained in the manga but it is theorized that Saturn’s elemental power is gravity, which ultimately means that this attack may create some form of singularity that swallows the world she’s on. Upon casting Silence Glaive Saturn also perishes (but is always reborn into another ‘version’ of Hotaru).*
- Death Reborn Revolution: Like with many of Saturn’s attacks the true nature of Death Reborn Revolution is unclear. Dialogue in the manga suggests that this is a life-drain attack.
- Silence Wall: A barrier that Saturn creates to shield herself and her comrades. Again, it relates to the theory that she has control of gravity.
- Silence Glaive Surprise: An attack launched from Saturn’s glaive that shoots a dark energy beam
- Reincarnation: Sailor Saturn has the ability to reincarnate herself after death, theoretically making herself immortal. Once reincarnated she lives a normal life with no knowledge of her prior existence until Sailor Saturn reawakens in her, then she has a memory of her previous lives.
* This attack is too powerful for this game and will not be included in the portrayal of Saturn, although she may mention/threaten it.
SINS & VIRTUES:
- Wrath: Considering Saturn’s past and her decision to destroy an entire world; wrath is her strongest sin. She chose the most extreme and dramatic of options to defeat her enemy despite the huge cost of innocent life. She works in extremes and last resorts.
- Envy: There are several points in the manga where Tomoe expresses some mild envy towards her fellow scouts for their close bond and friendship.
- Chastity: Hotaru shares a very innocent, chaste love with a lot of the characters in the series; in particular Chibiusa. She freely admits that she loves her without hesitation and shows a pure adoration.
